Open Level Modern Dance @ AS220 Live Arts Dance Studio
Sep 2 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Open Level Modern Dance with  Katie McNamara // Wednesdays @ 6:30-8pm // $13 per class; $60 for 6 classes

This open level class welcomes a wide spectrum of movers who want to explore fundamental physical connections and integrate those within expressive movement. The class begins on the floor in explorations of weight, momentum and range of motion in joints. Moving to a mid-level we will take time to condition the muscles within efficient patterns. In standing we investigate the dynamics of opposition in balance, gesture and weight shift to traverse the space across,  under and around.   All are welcome!

Katie McNamara is a dance artist, a cook, a mother and a teacher. Along with her husband Olase Freeman, she co-directs their company, BaldSoul, within which they strive to find the locus where art and life coexist.  Their most recent work is parenting a beautiful boy, Kayin Effie. Katie spent her preliminary professional years in Philadelphia where she danced with Group Motion, Scrap Performance Group and Leah Stein Dance Company. She was deeply influenced by the city’s diverse artistic community and the raw spontaneity of it‘s stage.  During this time she also co-founded and directed the Bald Mermaids, named “best new modern dance company” by Philadelphia’s City Paper.  Her work has been shown at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Philadelphia’s Painted Bride Art Center, the Carriage House, Galapagos Art Space, the Projekt Theatre (Dresden, Germany) as well as during the Silesian Dance Festival (Bytom, Poland).  Her recent choreographic residencies include Rhode Island College Dance Company, Providence College Dance Company, Roger Williams University and Salve Regina University.  Katie currently teaches Dance Composition at Dean College and has had a fourteen year career as a Pilates teacher-certified through Pilates Method Alliance. She is pursuing a MFA in dance at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Paper Theatre by Great Small Works and Facto Teatro @ AS220's Blackbox
Sep 2 @ 7:30 pm – 9:15 pm
Paper Theatre by Great Small Works and Facto Teatro @ AS220's Blackbox

Great Small Works members Trudi Cohen and John Bell are teaming up with Facto Teatro from Mexico City and Barbara Steinitz from Berlin to share a program of Paper Theater for theaters and community centers across New England.

Wednesday Sept 2nd, 730 PM, $15 regular admission, free entry for Brown/RISD students with ID.

THE PROGRAM

Facto Teatro:  Don Chico Con Alas (Don Chico with Wings)

Performed by Alejandro Benítez, Antonio Cerezo and Armando Tapia.

Based on a story by the Mexican writer Eraclio Zepeda, Facto Teatro’s Don Chico lives in the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico. To go from one village to another he must come down the mountain, cross the jungle, then the river and up the opposite hill.  He decides he needs to build himself a pair of wings and fly, to reach the sky before national holidays.  A story of ingenuity, creativity, surrealism and human adventure, which tells us that, for some, the sky is the limit.

Facto Teatro and Barbara Steinitz: Duraznos azules (Blue Peaches)

Based on a Mexican tale, design by Barbara Steinitz, construction by Facto Teatro and Barbara Steinitz. Performed by Alejandro Benítez and Barbara Steinitz.

Eight-year-old Pedro wants to find out why the peach tree in grandmother’s garden is producing blue peaches. But the adults always give him the same answer: “There are no blue peaches, boy.” First collaboration between Facto Teatro, based in Mexico City, and Barbara Steinitz from Berlin, Blue Peaches was produced in collaboration with and premiered at the 26th Preetzer Papiertheatertreffen (Paper Theater Festival) in Preetz, Germany, 2013.

Trudi Cohen and John Bell:  Living Newspaper, Episode Two: Sidewalk Ballet

A recent Toy Theater series, the name Living Newspaper is a nod to the docu-drama form developed by the Federal Theater Project  in the 1930s, and inspired by our work with Great Small Works’ news-based Toy Theater work, “Terror As Usual.”  This second episode contemplates the life of the city, featuring Jane Jacobs, Robert Moses, a burning bush, and the sidewalk.

Sep 3 @ 6:15 pm – 7:30 pm
Evening Yoga Yoga with Jamie Arnold // Thursdays @ 6:15-7:30pm // $13 per class; $60 for 6 classes
Class incorporates a seated centering and focus on breath connection which then leads to a gentle warm-up of the spine. After moving the spine in multiple directions, we will easily make our way to being on hands and feet and eventually flow through a simplified series of sun salutations to get the body warm. We will then explore balance postures, twists and back strengthening exercises and eventually make our way back to the floor for more restorative poses leading to savasana. All are welcome!

Jamie Arnold is a local yoga educator and performing artist. She has been teaching a regular gentle flow class at the East Side YMCA for 2.5 years and has taught yoga in some way shape or form through Squam Art Workshops, Now Yoga & Fitness, Fight2Fitness, Om Kids, Rhode Runner, Studio Exhale and AS220. Jamie received her 200 hour yoga teaching certification in the winter of 2012 through the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockbridge, MA. For Jamie, yoga has helped her to truly be in the present moment, let go of stress and feel like weight has been lifted from her body.

Live Bait: Race @ 95 Empire Black Box
Sep 4 @ 10:00 pm – 11:45 pm

Race

The themes at Live Bait have always been open to personal interpretation. It has always been about “any way, shape or form.” The only constriction (besides the six minute time limit) is that the stories are TRUE STORIES: not rants, not routines, not fairy tales. This has been true for the last seven years and will be true for as long as Live Bait exists. With that in mind, September’s theme is “Race.” Do you have a story to tell?

If you have a true story that in any way, shape or form fits September’s theme, come to Live Bait, put your name in the fishbowl and, when your name is called, tell it. Remember: no notes, no rants, no stand-up routines, and there is a six minute time limit. Of course, all are more than welcome to simply sit back and listen.

Live Bait is hosted by Phil Goldman, with banter, musical accompaniment and monthly theme song by Jerry “The Professor” Gregoire.

Learn To Solder With Mitch Altman: Make a TV-Be-Gone @ AS220 Labs
Sep 5 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

tv

Mitch Altman, inventor of TV-B-Gone, is in residence at AS220 for most of September 2015. Come to AS220 Labs for this workshop and learn to solder while putting together a socially-redeeming kit: the TV-Be-Gone. Sign up in the AS220 Shop.

Your TV-B-Gone(R) universal remote control resembles other TV remote controls, but is different in two important ways. First, it only has a power button that allows you to switch a TV on or off. You control when you see, rather than what you see. Second, the device is so small that it easily fits in your pocket, so that you have it handy whenever you need it wherever you go: airports, bars, restaurants, laundromats, etc.

From Scratch: A Works in Process Night @ AS220's Blackbox

FROM SCRATCH is a series of work in progress sharings at AS220’s Ninety-five Empire Black Box Space.
http://www.fromscratch.straycreatives.com/

Theatre and performance makers from the local community will ‘scratch’ their work and audiences are invited to be a part of its development.

Tickets $7. 100% of the proceeds go to the artists and producers to support the making of new work and the continued promotion of the FROM SCRATCH series at AS220.

The evening will feature new and innovative artists making performance-based work in Providence, Rhode Island, and beyond and encourage feedback direct from audiences to shape new work.

SO FAR WE’VE GOT

Thinking Too Much About Growing Up
Laura A. Kaplan

Part comedy routine, part creative public speaking, Laura will speak on the ridiculousness of choosing a profession to aspire to in preschool and how she rationalised some of the sexist attitudes she faced as a preschool student in the late 80s.

Streetlight Necks
Alicia Ortiz

Brief Description Of Ideas You’re Working On (required): A poetry collection attempting to capture the fragility and yearning of a city in the summer. Very Providence centric. The fluctuation of human traffic through the year. Tension between change and sedation.

Lastly, Christopher Johnson will also be bringing us a little something he’s been working on that’s brand new!

What is Scratch?
Scratches are very new, very experimental iterations of work – nothing polished, nothing held back. Each night will be an opportunity to see how new performance and theatre work is made in a variety of disciplines including devised theatre, spoken word/comedy, new writing, and dance. Just being in the room helps artists develop their work further. Feedback will also be highly encouraged, an exciting opportunity for audiences to directly influence the development of new work.
