Ramiro Davaro-Comas: International Artist In Residence – February 24th

AS220 is proud to host Ramiro Davaro-Comas, illustrator and graphic designer, as our Artist-In-Residence for the month of February 2013.

Ramiro’s work reflects the local communities and the cultural aspects of the countries he’s visited throughout his life, using pen & ink, spray paint, photography and acrylic as his medium. He is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and received a degree in Event Management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.  After a time of travel and art-making, Ramiro is back in Providence.

During his residency, Ramiro will work in a collection of two dimensional pieces that will explore the intersection between community and street advertising.  He aims to produce a series of surreal characters and landscapes, all searching for their identities as they travel throughout the city, bombarded by media and consumerism.  The work he will create in Providence will become part of a larger internationally-focused project through which he has been similarly exploring the social landscape of cities like Berlin, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires and New York.

“As a society we are bombarded constantly, almost harassed, by these forms of advertising in our cities and neighborhoods. By using these techniques in the background of my work, each finished piece contains physical material from the city, and gives them regional and historical legitimacy.” – Ramiro

Ramiro will present his work at the AS220 Main Gallery (115 Empire St) this Sunday, February 24th at 5pm. Free admission. Check out his portfolio at www.trucostudios.com
