Introduction to Audio Recording – January 11, 18, 25 /// 6 – 9 PM /// $120
Explore the recording process at AS220’s Media Arts Lab and Editing Suite (available for public use upon completion of this workshop!). By the end, you’ll gain the skills necessary to set up, record, edit, and export your very own audio projects. This workshop is intended for media artists, actors, narrators, singers, musicians, and podcasters who want to make quality recordings on a low budget in their homes or in our community space. We’ll balance theoretical concepts with practical techniques to help you approach your future projects!
Introduction to Digital SLR Photography – January 21, 28 /// 1 – 3 PM /// $99
Come equipped with your DSLR (that’s Digital Single-Lens Reflex) camera and get set to learn it like the back of your hand. Once you’ve completed this workshop. you’ll feel confident using your DSLR, and will be able capture the pictures you’ve always wanted. Weather permitting, we’ll go on a photo walk around downtown Providence!.
Video Production Basics – January 16, 23, 20 /// 6 – 9 PM /// $120
Using three common video production scenarios (Interview / 3-Point Lighting, On-Site Live Capture / B-Roll, and Narrative Scene) this workshop provides a hands-on approach to creating great video. In addition to having access to AS220’s equipment and shooting studio, participants are welcome to bring their own gear that they are looking to incorporate into future video projects.
Introduction to the Laser and Vinyl Cutter – January 9, 16 /// 6 – 9 PM /// $80
Learn how to use the laser cutter to cut or etch wood, plastics, papers or textiles AND learn how to use the vinyl cutter to make stickers, signs, and more! This workshop will cover the basics of using the laser and vinyl cutter safely, techniques for working with different materials, and software tools for preparing work for the cutters. This is a hands-on workshop; bring a project if you like! After taking the workshop, you will have a solid understanding of what the machine can do and how to design a project. Students will be certified to use the Labs’ laser cutter after completing this follow up session.
Introduction to the CNC Router – January 20, 27 /// 2 – 6 PM /// $100
This workshop is for anyone interested in using a CNC Router for digital fabrication, specifically the ShopBot machine for computer-controlled cutting and routing. The course covers an introduction to the ShopBot, Computer-Aided Design software to design projects for the machine, creation of 2D tool paths for the machine using PartWorks, and basic machine operation and safety. You will learn how to safely operate the machine on your own, so that you may use the machine independently after completing the training and signing up for membership. This workshop consists of two parts, 1 3-hour instructional session and a followup session on the machine where you run a project on the machine.
Introduction to Electronics: DIY Arduino – January 21, 28 /// 1 – 4 PM /// $125
Learn how to solder and program electronics! We will be assembling an Educato Kit: an Arduino-compatable microcontroller that is perfect for beginners and prototyping new projects. We will go over electronic components, circuit board layout, reading schematics, the basics of electric theory, Arduino language, and programming and circuit assembly. Participants will leave with soldering skills and a fancy new tool to add to their arsenal of creativity. With this knowledge, you will also be able to make simple repairs on electronics that were once thought broken for good.
Introduction to Silkscreen – January 15, 22 /// 6 – 10 PM /// $100
Screenprinting is an easy and versatile printing process that can be used to transfer graphic images to paper, wood, fabric, and lots of materials. It is ideal for making t-shirts, posters, coasters, greeting cards/stationery, and more. Bring an idea and something you want to print on and we’ll show you how it’s done. Participants will design, print, and exchange a two-color print with a maximum dimension of 8″ x 10″. The first class will be dedicated to designing and creating stencils, and second class will learn proper printing techniques, registration, and troubleshooting in the second class!

A comprehensive introduction to screenprinting, as described above, but offered in one 8-hour day!
How to Break Your Eyes: Silkscreen Halftones and You – January 14, 21, 28 /// 10 AM – 2 PM /// $170
This workshop is perfect for the student that has a working knowledge of screenprinting, butis interested in learning how to work with halftone patterns to create photographic images, accurate registration methods, and how to make your positives using our 36” large format inkjet printer.
Introduction to Etching – January 21, 28, February 4 /// 12 – 3 PM /// $160
This is an introductory class that is appropriate for students of all backgrounds and experiences. We’ll cover basic mark-making skills as well as etching press operation. Participants will use traditional etching grounds and resists to etch copper plates in a ferric chloride solution. Learn ink mixing and application, plate preparation, wiping, paper tearing, and registration. Students’ specific interests will guide the demonstrations, and there will be time for each participant to work on an single project.
Introduction to Offset PrintingJanuary 15, 22, 29, February 5, 12, 19 /// 6 – 10 PM /// $250
Colorful zines, artists’ books, posters, flyers, and more can be created quickly in large quantities using the Printshop’s offset printing press. The first class will be spent in the Media Arts Lab using the Adobe Creative Suite to turn your ideas into files ready for the press. Learn how to run the ABDick 9850 Offset Press – a commercial press capable of creating hundreds of prints in a matter of mere minutes. Finishing processes Including using our pneumatic folding machine, using our saddle stitch stapler, and trimming on the guillotine will also be covered!
