MEDIA ARTS

VIDEO EDITING BASICS WITH ADOBE PREMIERE CC
video_largeThe work you do in art, education, marketing, or advocacy work can benefit from video projects, and this workshop will show you the essential tools and workflow to make a video from start to finish. The class as a whole will walk through the entire editing and post-production process for making a short one-minute video using media provided to you.


INTRODUCTION TO THE DARKROOM
AS220-Darkroom-by-ElliotClapp_largeLearn your way around the Paul Krot Community Darkroom. From mixing chemicals to understanding enlargers, gain a hands on introduction to traditional black and white photo printing. Students should bring two rolls of exposed film to class to develop. The cost of the workshop includes a material fee of $20 consisting of film, five sheets of RC paper, and chemistry.


INTRODUCTION TO AUDIO RECORDING
audio_1024x1024In this workshop, we will explore the recording process at AS220 Industries’ media lab and editing suite. By the end, you’ll gain skills to setup, record, edit, and export projects. This workshop is intended for media artists, actors, narrators, singers, and podcasters who want to make quality voice recordings on a low budget in their homes or in our community space.


COMPUTER BASICS – INTRODUCTION TO THE MAC
mission_control_mtl_1024x1024This two-hour class will allow you to better understand Apple’s OS (operating system), making it easier to learn software skills in other workshops. Get comfortable with the workflow, terminology, and shortcuts that will improve your overall productivity working within design software and on our Macs.

 


DIGITAL EDITING WITH ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CC
levels1_1024x1024Introduction to Photoshop will allow participants to learn the basic tools and uses of Photoshop CC including photo correction, resizing, working with text and saving your files. We’ll also dive into using layers, effects, and masking. No Photoshop experience is required and handouts will be provided for easy reference.

 


INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL SLR PHOTOGRAPHY
DSLR-3_1024x1024Come equipped with your DSLR camera and get set to learn it like the back of your hand. After this class, you’ll feel confident using your DSLR and capture those pictures that you’ve been wanting. Weather permitting, we’ll go on a photo walk around downtown Providence.

 


INTRODUCTION TO LARGE FORMAT PHOTOGRAPHY
22182563738_8ca889088d_w_1024x1024In three weeks, you’ll get a hands-on introduction to large format photography. Using AS220’s collection of 4×5 cameras, Norlan Olivo will take you through the entire large format process, from operating the cameras and their learning settings, to developing 4×5 film and making prints. Only $160, real steal for a class of this caliber! Includes cost of chemistry, film, negative sleeves, and paper.


VISUAL STORYTELLING: COMIC BOOK ARTISTS & ILLUSTRATORS
DR_BRAINGAME_1024x1024Any pro will tell you the road to becoming a better cartoonist or illustrator is storytelling. The art forms are all about conveying a narrative. This is a perfect crash course for anyone wanting to learn how to make comics, graphic novels or illustrations that speak to a viewer. Whether it’s start forward, abstract, traditional or digital, all the basics will be covered in this intensive class. This workshop is geared for ages 13 and up.


PRINTSHOP

OFFSET PRINTING MASTER CLASS

Colorful ‘zines, single-page artists’ books, posters, and flyers can all be created in large quantities using the Printshop’s Offset Press. You will learn how to run the ABDick 9850 Offset Press – a commercial press capable of creating hundreds of prints in a matter of minutes. Finishing processes will be covered including using our pneumatic folding machine, using our saddle stitch stapler, and trimming on the guillotine.


MAKE YOUR OWN SKETCHBOOK!

Students will learn the coptic stitch to create the book block, or the pages of the book, and the Swiss binding technique in order to create their own hard covers. Students will leave the workshop with a completed book!


INTRODUCTION TO LETTERPRESS
Screen_Shot_2016-05-05_at_1.59.27_PM_1024x1024Fine detail and embossment make for stunning, professional-quality business cards, invitations, announcements and labels. Print your favorite poem by hand-setting lead type one letter at a time; make a poster or a broadside with wood type; transfer your line drawings to photo-polymer plate for editioning. This course will cover the old and new uses of the letterpress.


INTRODUCTION TO ETCHING
IMG_7516_1024x1024This is an introductory class Appropriate for students of all backgrounds and experiences. We’ll cover basic mark-making skills as well as etching press operation. Participants will use traditional etching grounds and resists to etch copper plates in a ferric chloride solution. Also we will teach you ink mixing and application, plate preparation, wiping, paper tearing, and registration.


INTERMEDIATE SILKSCREEN: PRINTING REPEATING PATTERNS ON FABRIC
allison-nike_1024x1024This course will introduce the design and registration methods necessary for screenprinting repeating patterns. We’ll go over different types of repeats, creating a jog line, and options for designing by hand or on the computer. Then we’ll get into the technical aspects of registering and printing a repeating pattern on our AS220-sized version of a typical textile printing table.


BEGINNER’S RELIEF PRINTING TECHNIQUES
unnamed-7_1024x1024This three week class will cover the basics of one color relief printing, reductive block techniques, and multi block color prints. Each student will learn how plan, carve and print imagery from linoleum and wood surfaces onto a variety of papers. Hand printing as well as printing on the small etching press will be explored.

 


LABS

FAB LAB FOUNDATIONS 1: INTRODUCTION TO THE LASER AND VINYL CUTTER
Processed with VSCO with hb2 presetLearn how to use the laser cutter to cut or etch wood, plastics, papers or textiles. This class will cover the basics of using the laser cutter safely, techniques for working with different materials, and software tools for preparing work for the cutter. This is a hands-on workshop; bring a project if you like!

 


FAB LAB FOUNDATIONS 2: INTRODUCTION TO THE CNC ROUTER
This wProcessed with VSCO with a6 presetorkshop is for anyone interested in using a CNC Router for digital fabrication, specifically the ShopBot machine for computer-controlled cutting and routing. The course covers an introduction to the ShopBot, Computer-Aided Design software to design projects for the machine, creation of 2D tool paths for the machine using PartWorks, and basic machine operation and safety.
