Vudu Sister is the brainchild of Keith J.G McCurdy, Rhode Island singer/songwriter, and poet with strong French, Sicilian, and Romanichal gypsy roots. Keith has been writing and performing for over twenty years and has been a Providence resident at AS220 for nearly a decade. The Sister has been an entity since April 2011 with a rotating cast of characters over the years.
Vudu Sister released Her debut Bastard Children in 2012 quickly followed by Household Items in 2013. In 2016, She released Mortis Nervosa, a collection of songs inspired by “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” by Alvin Schwarz in addition to folklore and fairy tales.
Burnt Offerings, a collection of original compositions written entirely in Latin and Ancient Greek-inspired by tragic heroines and goddesses from the myths of Classical antiquity is ready for consumption on May 4th, 2021.
The Sister’s influences include grunge, classical music, European and American folk music, and blues. Literary influences include the poetry of Classical Antiquity, Old English poetry, Romantic literature, fairy tales, and weird fiction.
This stark, acoustic performance is a retrospective culmination of ten years of songwriting, poetry, artistic growth, and the development of a single artist enduring over the years and continuing with a particular vision even as the grace of various, featured accompaniment has come and gone.
The work of the Sister is intimate, gothic, sometimes personal accounts of harrowing human horrors and sorrows. There are flavors of sincerity, grotesque witchcraft, macabre irony, and bratty, impish antagonism. There is an initial punk-rock ethic that shapes a certain sense of something to prove that eventually gives way to a desire for elegance, subtlety in the efforts of a spiritual, artistic communion.
