Tales from the Sandman explores the secret life of dreams as we journey to a date, a birthday party, an encounter with a pumpkin, through the woods, to an audience with the illuminati, and a basketball game. Even an insomniac can understand this wonderful celebration of dreamy tales! Tales from the Sandman is a kooky journey through the minds of eight dreamers. About Tales from the Sandman:
The piece was created by the Contemporary Theater Ensemble in 2017 under the direction of Susan Thompson. It was developed based on the dream work of renowned playwright Jon Lipsky. The piece will tour to Boston, Greenfield, Massachusetts, Martha’s Vineyard, and Rhode Island. Tales from the Sandman is an original work which began with each student keeping a dream journal, and then continued with script writing inspired by readings from Eduardo Galeano, Suzan-Lori Parks, myths and other sources. The ensemble worked with paintings, shared fragments from stories of each others’ lives, and created music and videos. These fragments were then all gathered together, along with writings and research into dreaming, to create Tales from the Sandman. Sound designer and composer Nate Tucker , collaborated with students in rehearsals and created original sounds to bring their dreams to life. Directed Susan Thompson shares, “In our training sessions the students learned bande mimé, (a gesture and sound style developed by Jacques Lecoq at his International School in Paris and inspired by cartoons), and applied dream techniques from Martha’s Vineyard playwright and director, Jon Lipsky (1944-2011), as well as from my own eclectic tool kit”. Chair of Theater Sara Stackhouse adds, “We are thrilled to have such an original and professional production, anchored by the voices and dreams of our diverse and talented student ensemble, to share with audiences throughout New England as we embark on our tour this May.”
