Running weekly on Thursdays at 5:00pm from Thursday, September 17th til October 15th. Outdoor classes are held at the Haus of Glitter Performance Lab + Parq at 97 Admiral Street, Providence, RI.

This high energy class infuses the foundations of house, hip hop, contemporary and modern jazz dance styles. Street jazz or Jazz funk made its way into pop culture in the early 1980s as artists like Michael Jackson and Madonna adopted dances from the “street” and fused them with classical and modern jazz movements. By the 1990s and early 2000s, street jazz evolved into what we now may see as commercial/video dance – made popular by artists like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. Warm-up exercises focus on isolations, mobility, syncopated movement and classical jazz dance technique. Dancers then learn and explore the details of a choreographed combination. Class ends with a cool-down.

Lea D’Arminio is an Italian-American Providence/Boston based dancer, educator, and choreographer as well as a yoga instructor and fitness professional. From her very first ballet class at age 5 – movement and creativity has played an intrical part of Lea’s daily life and general happiness. As a teenager to young adult, Lea has had the honor to work with choreographers Dan Karaty, Wade Robson, Tyce Diorio and Brian Friedman. As a professional for over 10 years both at home and abroad, Lea has danced, choreographed and taught for GeaDanza of Trieste, Italy to Urbanity Dance in Boston. Since her move to Providence in late 2017, Lea has danced with and continues to perform in projects with Urbanity Dance, Natalie Johnson Dance, InProv Dance Project, Metamorphosis Dance Company, Mambo Pa Ti Dance Company, New Works Dance Company and Denizen Arts. With a strong foundation in classical ballet, Lea specializes in hip hop, afro-caribbean dance, commercial/street jazz, contemporary forms and modern dance. Lea continues to teach students of all ages and capabilities – from ages 3 to adult – in local studios and in school classrooms. She works hard to establish a judgment-free zone for all movers – emphasizing the importance of understanding, community and support in shared spaces. Lea is looking forward to a joyful return to AS220 this fall with street jazz & contemporary fundamentals!
