Brooklyn-based artist and author Marty Allen (martystuff.com) presents a Sock Puppet Making workshop for ALL AGES as part of a week long AS220 residency.
Marty Allen, author of “Sock Puppet Madness” and creator of The Sock Puppet Portraits, will be offering Sock Puppet Making workshops and selling a limited number of sock puppets and their portraits.
During the hour-long workshop meet the artist and his work and make your own very own sock puppet, all materials and tools provided. In addition to making a beautiful sock puppet, you’ll also be given a chance to give them a personality, too, with help and guidance in building a comic character surrounding your creation.
Marty’s Sock Puppet Portraits are framed photographs of original sock puppets that artist Marty Allen creates. Each portrait has a name, story, and eerily elaborate life to follow (often via the internet). Marty first began selling them nearly a decade ago as a street artist in New York City. He’d sell them to whomever passed by and was intrigued and wouldn’t arrest him for it. He has been making and hawking the Sock Puppet Portraits and other strange artworks in Brooklyn and New York ever since.
“Sock Puppet Madness” was published by CICO books in 2013 and has been called “…that rare craft book that always inspires and never intimidates…” (Wired.com). Moreover, it’s been said that Marty, “has simultaneously simplified and elevated the art of designing sock puppets…” (Peter Linz, aka Walter the Muppet). Since then, Marty has authored three more books including October 2015’s “Emojis: The Secret Behind the Smile” (Dog ’N Bone Books).
Marty Allen is a Boston-born and Brooklyn-based working artist, writer, musician, puppet-maker, teacher, and liker of life. He has exhibited, performed, and sold his art all over the place. Maybe right over there? He is best known for creating The Sock Puppet Portraits, for performing with multimedia rock-band/art collective/giant monster/Sock Puppet, Uncle Monsterface, and for writing some weird books, but he does lots of other stuff, too, including (but not limited to) making often-tasty sandwiches and walking his attractive and sassy dog.
