Formed at Brown University, Animal, Esq. has existed in some incarnation since fall of 2011, when Nick Ebisu (guitar), Soumya Ghosh (vocals, keyboards), and Phillipe Roberts (drums, guitar, effects), began playing music together with the simple yet elusive goal of making music they would want to listen to. After playing a few shows, they were joined by Adam Asher (bass, vocals) in April 2012.
The band’s songs make use of everything from heavy drones, to lush atmospheric textures, to energetic dance beats. Present in all of their music are Nick’s guitar-work in its gorgeous expansiveness, Soumya’s ethereal vocals and gritty synth tones, Adam’s bass lines oscillating between melodic and heavy, and Phillipe’s rock-solid drumming and otherworldly loops holding everyone—and everything—together.
This year, the band has released a number of demo recordings (titled, appropriately, Demos 2014) as well as the live recording Live From Outerspace, all of which are available online. They hope to begin recording their debut EP in the coming year.”
