Brooklyn-based Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn (b. 1974, Philadelphia) creates incorruptible independent pop music defined by her graceful songwriting and adventuresome recordings. Mirah has released over a dozen solo and collaborative recordings on K Records, Kill Rock Stars and various US domestic and foreign independent labels while touring the United States, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand many times since 1998. Pitchfork has praised her “incredible voice—a versatile coo that can flit from low, sultry tones to high, airy falsetto in one breath.”
Mirah’s 6th full-length solo record, ‘Understanding’ (releasing September 7, 2018 on Mirah’s own imprint, Absolute Magnitude Recordings) is a conscientious return to her early unconventional recording process. The record embraces the spirited imperfection and rawness inclusive of rough first takes, natural room sounds, and a fair amount of broken equipment. Written and recorded in a time of political and personal upheaval – family illness and the death of a dear friend, all in the shadow of the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath – ‘Understanding’ presents an even hand of political themes, love songs and introspective rallying cries.
Frequent collaborators of the years have included well-known producers Phil Elverum (The Microphones/Mount Eerie), Merrill Garbus (tUnE-yArDs), Eli Crews (The Julie Ruin), Tucker Martine, Guy Sigsworth and Calvin Johnson, songwriters and composers such as Thao Nguyen, Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Lori Goldston, Susie Ibarra, Jherek Bischoff, Tara Jane O’Neil and Khaela Maricich (The Blow) and visual and media artists such as Anna Oxygen of Cloud Eye Control, Britta Johnson and Ginger Brooks Takahashi.
THE HUNTRESS AND THE HOLDER OF HANDS
MorganEve Swain began The Huntress and Holder of Hands as a vessel for exploring grief and growth.
Originally home-recorded using multi-layer tracks of voice and strings, Swain pulled creative energy from the experience of losing her husband Dave Lamb to leukemia and the bond they shared as the duo Brown Bird.
With the ambition to perform live and explore beyond personal grief, The Huntress and Holder of Hands expanded to a 5-musician band, employing cello, string bass, electric bass, voice and drums, with Swain primarily on five-string viola and guitar. The band builds harmony, string and bass-driven pieces influenced by Post-Metal, Blues and Americana and offers an intense musical and lyrical experience that explores love, loss, power and strength.
The Huntress and Holder of Hands self-released The Water Street Demos EP in November 2015. The band’s first full-length album, Avalon, will be released on September 15 2017.
Arch Cape is the solo project of musician, visual artist and filmmaker Rachel Blumberg. She has been performing in this incarnation since moving to Rhode Island from Portland, Oregon in 2012. Rachel was deeply involved in the music scene of Portland for many years and was a touring and recording member of bands such as The Decemberists, M.Ward, Laura Gibson, Michael Hurley and many more. While she lived in Portland she also painted and had some exhibitions of her work. In 2011 she was commissioned to make a stop motion music video for the musician Tom Hagerman from the band Devotchka (Denver). Moving to Rhode Island gave her a blank slate and she began to experiment and improvise with both music and stop motion animation, developing a new musical and visual language revolving around explorations of human thought, feeling, and perception. The culmination of all of this work is Arch Cape. Using various forms of the drum set, pitched and non-pitched percussion, synthesizers, and her voice, Arch Cape improvises fragile, beautifully mesmerizing, sometimes explosive emotional soundscapes to her stop motion animated and film collages.
