Woman is a narrative based composition that is creating a sonic portrait of a desired woman without referring to any visual and immediate indicators to her identity. In this iteration of the piece I am exploring how a desired figure can completely consume spaces (both mental and physical) through use of real time spatialization and vocal processing.



Ashley Frith

Solo viola and voice

Artist and educator, Ashley Frith, is a Resident Musician and Network Fellow with Community MusicWorks in Providence, RI. Her work consists of performing viola, teaching, and developing anti-racism practices. Focusing on self-love practices, her anti-racism work particularly addresses the internalization of racism. Last spring, Ashley was the music director, arranger, and composer for the Trinity Repertory Company’s production of Jose Rivera’s Marisol, directed by Brian Mertes. She explores the use of sound as a healing modality, in combination with mindful practices, and the effect these tools can have on mental health.

Experimental ambient/electronic

Sustained digital sine tones are sent through “trash speakers” (speakers that are only membrane, devoid of external body) that struggle to cope with the vibrations they receive. In their uncontrollable frenzy, these speakers transform the original digital tones into more complex distortions. Contact microphones pick up this chaotic noise and send it to a computer, where Zaes applies an algorithm, based on Brian House’s BRAID.live, that fragments the sound with imperfections. As the algorithm’s interventions become more and more unpredictable with each loop, Pulsations’ recurring rhythm structure devolves from pulse to anarchy (Text by Poorna Swami).
