Meeting of the Minds and Skunk Jesus & The Jazz Disciples
On June 5th we will be ending a crazy three week straight run of weekly jazz shows at AS220 with another installment of our bimonthly concert series. This time around we have some heavy players coming from around New England to mix it up with the locals and show us some exciting music.

Starting off the night we have Meeting of the Minds, a Boston based free improvisation ensemble featuring some of the best players in the area. Leading and composing for the group is Ryan Kowal on vibraphone.  Other members of the group include Charlie Kohlhase (saxophones) and Kit Demos (bass), who are well respected veteran musicians in the local and national jazz scene, as well as Phil Mazza (guitar) and Ben Dicke (drums), who are making names for themselves as some of the most sought after improvisers in the area.  Their first album, Hub Alignment, was released in April of this year.  Joining them for this show will be a special guest, Kelly Roberge on tenor saxophone. Closing the night we have Skunk Jesus & The Jazz Disciples who are a collective of musicians from New England who are working to help foster the modern “Jazz” scene by combining elements of traditional jazz with contemporary improvisation. Drawing heavily from artists like Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, and Frank Zappa, the group approaches the traditional song form from an Escherian perspective and seeks to define not only what causes jazz to be jazz, but to then turn that paradigm inside out hoping to expose the creative process behind our music. They say honesty, interpretation, and creative cooperation are the three most important principles that guide their musical endeavors.
Music kicks off around 9pm as usual, it’s going to be a great night so we hope to see you there!
