On March 21st “Is This Jazz?” will be hosting our first of what will be a bimonthly jazz jam at AS220. Jam sessions have long been a tradition in jazz and have helped strengthen the abilities, careers, and communities of musicians and fans alike. We will have a house band made up of a quartet of local players – Ben Shaw on sax, Nick Sanfillipo on keys, Evan Carley on bass, and Ben Dicke on drums – who will lay the foundation for others to come up on stage to play tunes and improvise together. In accordance with AS220’s policy of all originals we will be playing from a collection of tunes called “The RI Book” which is an assortment of compositions kindly lent to us by a variety of local artists who have performed on the series, which thereby showcases their brilliance and allows us to further dive into their craft. Feel free to bring your own original lead sheets and we will be sure to include them in the festivities. If you are bringing a tune be sure to include C, Bb, and Eb copies. It is an all ages open jam so bring your axe, your charts, and of course, your chops. Admission is only $5 which will go directly to supporting the house band.
