Artists and art lovers with a desire to learn how to frame should attend this new workshop! This day serves as an introduction to the world of DIY framing. We’ll cover how take accurate measurements, hand cut four-ply mats, and give an overview of archival art mounting practices from hinging to floating. Expect conversations on presentation, design and how to incorporate these elements into one’s artistic practice, and/or art collection.

Take home two matted pieces and a clearer understanding of archival materials and terminology.

Required Materials

We will provide:

• linen tape or photo corners
• white museum matboard up to 16”x20” for art no larger than 12”x16”
• acid free foam core for backing
• utility blades
• an assortment of museum matboard in various colors for paper backed and rag mats in smaller sizes (9”x12” or less).

Students should bring :

• two pieces of art 12”x16” or lower. If it’s bigger or if you know you want something specific (i.e. not the white matboard provided) you will need to bring your own full sheet (32”x40”).
• pencil and white eraser
• ruler and right angle tool (optional)
• utility blade or exacto and cutting mat (optional)

“There are many ways in which picture framing has been made inaccessible to artists/art lovers both financially and in traditions surrounding limited visibility of process. Framing is a very concrete and straightforward skill/trade that is innately riddled with lots of imperfection and problem solving, no matter how experienced the framer. It will try your patience, and always take longer than you think. There are many different styles of framing, from white glove/museum, to production framing to DIY. I have worked in a variety of ways it is important to acknowledge that there are many ways to do the same thing. As a working artist, DIY framing is the closest hitting to home for me and I am so grateful for the opportunity to teach and provide access for others.”
