This is an introductory class appropriate for students of all backgrounds and experiences.

We will cover basic mark-making skills as well as etching press operation. Participants will use traditional etching grounds and resists to etch copper plates in a ferric chloride solution. We will also teach you ink mixing and application, plate preparation, wiping, paper tearing, and registration.

Students’ specific interests will guide the demonstrations, and there will be time for each participant to work on an individual project.

Supplies to bring to the first class:
-18-gauge copper plates (you can choose size, but do not exceed 10″ x 10″), we suggest the RISD 3D Store on North Main St.
-two sheets of Rives BFK paper (Utrecht, Jerry’s, or RISD Store)
-medium etching needle, Utrecht or RISD Store
-drypoint scribe, Utrecht or RISD Store
-scraper, Utrecht or RISD Store
-burnisher (we prefer curved) Utrecht or RISD Store
