INTRO TO THE SHOPBOT: DIGITAL WOODWORKING @ AS220 Industries

Get certified to use the 4’x8’ ShopBot for medium and large format woodworking projects.

  • Saturdays, February 5th & 12th, 1-5pm

This workshop is for anyone interested in using a CNC Router for digital fabrication, specifically the ShopBot machine for computer-controlled cutting and routing. The course covers an introduction to the ShopBot, Computer-Aided Design software to design projects for the machine, creation of 2D tool paths for the machine using VCarve Pro, and basic machine operation and safety.  You will learn how to safely operate the machine on your own, so that you may use the machine independently after completing the training and signing up for membership.

Our machine is a ShopBot PRS standard 96 with a cutting area of 96″ (x-axis) x 48″ (y-axis) x 6″ (z-axis). The machine is capable of machining 2D parts (profile, pockets, drilling) and making 3D carvings.  This workshop only covers 2D tool paths, not 3D carvings.

This workshop consists of two parts, one instructional session and a followup session on the machine where you run a project on the machine.

Instructor: Larry Zagorsky

Larry is a daily fixture at the AS220 Labs where he is a key member and a resident in the work-live studios above the labs.

My Bio and reason for being. I am a retired engineer (…with several patents) and have been hiding out at AS220 for the past seven years, never to return to regular employment. Being a resident at AS220 and a key-member gives me 24/7 access (…did I mention that I am a night owl). This means that I get to work when everyone else is sleeping! This also means that I can support “part time” DIY’ers that can only be here during their off hours and have become the de facto “go-to” person. In addition to teaching, 1-1 training for all the equipment, design and production work for artists, commission work, I am an artist for the three of us (me-my-and-I) that hang out here.

The Industries FabLab can be a bit overwhelming and intimidating, so I see my role as removing the fears of being in an unfamiliar environment and showing how creative, exciting, and fulfilling a place like this can really be! Creativity is contagious and we love to watch it spread like wildfire!
