An introduction to programming for those with no experience writing software!

Writing code and software is all too often shrouded in mystery, seeming like only the highly educated or super nerdy can do it. This class is intended to help move away from that mindset and empower you to learn this highly relevant skill.

This class will use “Processing”, a programming language derived from Java (the second most used programming language in the world) and an excellent tool to learn real life programming skills. During each class participants will have a series of small achievable challenges to solve through code. Each “challenge” will strive to explore common usage scenarios such as user interaction, animation, data storage and the correct code design patterns to use when tackling these problems.

Q: What is the difference between this workshop and Intro to Web Programming?
A: In the HTML/CSS workshop you will gain skills how to display and style content for the web. In this workshop, you will gain a greater understanding of how your computer actually works and the logic needed to create your own software for personal or professional purposes.

Q: What will I walk away with at the end?

  • Knowing how to use the tool / programming language “Processing”.
  • Knowing the basics of the Java programming language and concepts relevant to all programming languages.
  • The ability to think about how to use software to solve problems.
  • The ability to determine what is possible to achieve with software.
