INTRO TO LASER AND VINYL CUTTER @ AS220 Industries

Get certified to laser-cut wood, plastics, papers or textiles on the Epilog Mini AND learn how to use the vinyl cutter to make stickers and signs!

  • Saturdays, February 19th & 26th, 1-5pm

This class will cover the basics of using the laser and vinyl cutter safely, techniques for working with different materials, and software tools for preparing work for the cutters.

Our laser cutter is an Epilog Mini 24 The work area is 24″ x 12″, and it can hold items up to 8″ tall. We also have a cylindrical attachment that allows you to etch cylinders such as glassware. AS220’s vinyl cutter is a Roland Camm-1 CX-24 and can take vinyl rolls of 15″ and 24″ in width.

After taking the workshop, you will have a solid understanding of what the machine can do and how to design a project and will be certified to use the Labs’ laser cutter.

Prerequisites:

While it’s not mandatory, we encourage attendees to have working knowledge of computers and drawing programs such as Inkscape, Illustrator, Photoshop, Gimp, etc.

Instructor: Larry Zargosky

Larry is a daily fixture at the AS220 Labs where he is a key member and a resident in the work-live studios above the labs.

My Bio and reason for being. I am a retired engineer (…with several patents) and have been hiding out at AS220 for the past seven years, never to return to regular employment. Being a resident at AS220 and a key-member gives me 24/7 access (…did I mention that I am a night owl). This means that I get to work when everyone else is sleeping! This also means that I can support “part time” DIY’ers that can only be here during their off hours and have become the de facto “go-to” person. In addition to teaching, 1-1 training for all the equipment, design and production work for artists, commission work, I am an artist for the three of us (me-my-and-I) that hang out here.

The Industries FabLab can be a bit overwhelming and intimidating, so I see my role as removing the fears of being in an unfamiliar environment and showing how creative, exciting, and fulfilling a place like this can really be! Creativity is contagious and we love to watch it spread like wildfire!
