HeatNik Productions Presents “Past Forward in Reverse”
Choreography in Concert at AS220 January 15-17, 2016
HeatNik Productions presents its debut performance, Past Forward in Reverse, Friday and Saturday, January 15th and 16th at 7pm, and Sunday, the 17th at 3pm at the AS220 Black Box Theatre, 95 Empire St. Providence, RI. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance through Brown Paper Tickets or at the door.
HeatNik productions was formed when Heather Brown Dance and Freedom Dances combined forces to bring you Past Forward in Reverse, a dance concert featuring the choreography of Heather Brown and Nicole C. Laliberté, with guest performances by “Part of the Oath” and Ryan P. Casey.
Bringing together dancers from RI and Boston, this concert will take you on an emotionally diverse journey through the human experience. Brown and Laliberté have created works based on everything from navigating the rat race of life to recognizing the awe-inspiring power of nature. Friday night only,Ryan P. Casey will be premiering a contemporary solo choreographed by Laliberté. Casey is an award-winning tap dancer, teacher, choreographer, and dance writer who was named in 2015 as one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” and one of Boston’s “25 Most Innovative People Under 25.” Rhode Island based dance company, Part of the Oath, under the direction of Colleen Cavanaugh and Danielle Genest, will present the premiere of a powerful new duet choreographed by Jennifer Archibald of New York City based Arch Dance Company.
Brown’s Standing Tall was inspired by her experience in the Redwood National Park this summer. Her Along the Way investigates how people come and go from one’s life, sometimes appearing only briefly for a shared moment in time. Brown is also presenting a self-choreographed solo that explores perseverance in the face of negativity. Laliberté’s Verge, a work in 2 parts, celebrates being on the verge of greatness, and explores the struggle of being on the verge of despair. In counterpoint, Laliberté is creating a new brightly colored quartet to Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 1 in D. The two choreographers are also collaborating on a duet to Paganini’s Caprices for Violin, a humorous look at their journey together in the creation of this concert, made possible by a Production Residency at AS220. Both choreographers draw on their strong ballet backgrounds as well as traditional modern dance and contemporary somatic approaches in the creation of their works. Join these talented choreographers on this journey of movement through the past, present, and hopes for the future.

About the Choreographers:
Heather Brown, the creator of Heather Brown Dance, trained first with Boston Ballet and then with Ballet Theatre of Boston, performing as a member of Youth Works. Through college, she was able to continue her study of ballet with Rockford Dance Company of Illinois. She also started to expand her movement vocabulary by becoming a member of Chelonia, a modern dance company of Beloit. She has performed in a broad range of classical and contemporary works including Nutcracker, Cinderella, and Wreath of Memories. In 2013 she decided to rededicate her life to teaching and creating dance. She has most recently appeared in Growing up and Growing In – A Dance Party as part of V5 dance and in a work in progress presentation of Verge as part of Freedom Dances.
Nicole C. Laliberté, the artistic power behind Freedom Dances, holds her MFA in Choreography from UNCG and a BFA in Dance from The Boston Conservatory. Of note, she has taught at UNCG, James Madison University, Meredith College, Darton College, and Greensboro Ballet. Freedom Dances was officially created in 2004 while Ms. Laliberté was residing in North Carolina, as a pick-up company to showcase her work at a variety of venues. Freedom Dances has appeared at Old Dominion University’s Regional Choreographers’ Showcase, the Greensboro Fringe Festival, the North Carolina Dance Alliance Annual Event, North Carolina Dance Project’s Saturday Series, Cary Academy, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the North Carolina Dance Festival, Charlotte Dance Festival, and American Dance Festival’s Acts to Follow Series. The 2015 re-birth of the company, based in Rhode Island, has included invitations to Third Life Studio’s Choreographers Series in February, Luminarium Dance Company’s 24 Hour ChoreoFest hosted by the Dance Complex in September, and AS220’s Dance Works in Process in October.
