Already got the winter blues?

Take a cyanotype class at AS220 with Andre Lee Bassuet. Otherwise known as sunprints, we don’t need the sun when you have a UV exposure unit at the Industries. Learn how to prep the materials needed to treat fabric and paper and come away with a notebook as well as exchange a zine from everyone by the end of this single session workshop.

Cyanotypes are a historical printing process invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel. This is the same process used to make blueprints. Anna Atkins was the first person to use this technique to reproduce images. She placed plant specimens directly onto coated paper to create photograms. She privately published her book of photograms, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions in October 1843.

Cyanotypes made today use the same process. Cyanotype is a contact printing method, which means the negative, or whatever other material you choose to use, is placed directly on the sensitized paper or fabric.

WHAT TO BRING TO CLASS:

• Black and white imagery to work from as computer files on a flash drive or in your email

• Some objects of meaning or memory.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:

Andre Lee Bassuet is a book artist and graphic designer living in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. Her work primarily deals with memory and fleeting nature of human connections. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, she completed her MFA at Osaka University of Arts on a Fellowship from the Japanese Government Ministry of Education and a Bachelors from New York University. She has participated in artist residencies at AS220 and Manhattan Graphics Center and exhibited in New York, Providence, Michigan, Florida, Seattle, Red Lodge, Kyoto, Osaka, and Shanghai. Her bookarts is in the RISD Fleet Library collection, Columbia University Libraries, and Western Michigan University’s Special Collections. She has taught workshops at the Center for Book Arts, Osaka University of Arts and Cooper Union Adult Education.

Location: The AS220 Industries is located at the Mercantile at 131 Washington Street Providence, Rhode Island on the 1st floor. The entrance is located at the back of the building on Lucie Way; use the entrance under the AS220 Printshop sign, head upstairs and follow the signs. Ring the bell if the doors aren’t open (though they should be). 

Parking: There is a 2-hour metered on-street parking available, and parking is free on Sundays. We are also located near a parking garage with entry on Washington Street, look for the big blue parking sign.

Important Workshop Policies. Please be as respectful of the short time you and the other participants have to learn and be as on time as possible. If you arrive more than half an hour late, we will not be able to teach you. Please plan ahead, it always takes time to find on-street parking. 

Refund Policy: To cancel your reservation must email industries@as220.org at least two weeks in advance, or risk losing your payment.

Cancellation of workshops. If the minimum number is not met in workshop enrollment, the teacher may opt to cancel the workshop. If this is the case, we will give a full refund of workshop payment and first choice to enroll in future workshops. We will attempt to give as much notice as possible, thank you for your understanding.
