Bill Evans 78!
Part of Modern Movements Festival 2018An American dance icon celebrates his birthday with several good friends! This 90-minute program will feature seasoned professional dancers with guest appearances by two groups–vibrant young dance majors from Dean College and adult dancers from Elaine Colaneris Modern Jazz Dance Company, each performing one piece.
Bill Evans has celebrated his birthdays with annual dance concerts since 1980. This will be the fourth consecutive year that he has done so at AS220, and the third consecutive year that his birthday celebration will be part of the Modern Movements Dance Festival.
The program will showcase six works choreographed by Evans and one created by Claire Porter. Two of the works are in Evans uniquely lyrical style of modern dance. Two are infectious rhythm tap dances. One is a dynamic fusion of Horton-style modern dance and rhythm tap dancea world premiere to a new musical composition by Greg Woodsbie. And the final work is an inventive and humor performance art piece involving hundreds of props.
Besides Evans, featured performers are Kristina Berger (internally-celebrated modern dancer), Amy Burns and Melody Gamba (principal artists in Rhode Islands Fusionworks Dance Company), Don Halquist (32-veteran of the Evans Company) and Greg Woodsbie (accomplished composer/musician).
Evans is an award-winning choreographer known for his aesthetically-rich, beautifully-crafted dances that are also audience friendly and entertaining. Said Pulitizer-Priize-winning dance writer Alan Kriegsman in the Washington Post, “Evans seems to have more disguises than Sherlock Holmes, all wondrously credible and diverting. There is no question about the abundance of his talent.”
