EMPIRE REVUE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS
AS220 mainstay the Empire Revue is celebrating its tenth anniversary on Sunday, July 3. The sketch and variety show’s Anniversary Show, hosted and directed by Rhode Island singer/songwriter/performer Keith Munslow, will feature music, stand up comedy, burlesque, and special guest acts of all kinds, as well as sketch comedy and original music by the Sparkling Beatniks (Bridget Brewer, Eric Fulford, Jake Goldman, Nicky Mariani, Dave Rabinow, Tom Rajt, Kelly Seigh, Alan Sousa, Kate Teichman, and Stuart Wilson). The show’s house band, the Superchief Trio, will provide a soundtrack for the evening.
Keith Munslow developed the Empire Revue at the behest of AS220’s then-Artistic Director Burt Crenca, in an effort to bring a collaborative and consistently high quality variety show onto the AS220 Main Stage. Each month, Munslow selects guest acts to create a widely varying array of local performers that will complement the sketches created by the Sparkling Beatniks.
“I am excited and humbled to be reaching this milestone,” Munslow says. “I am incredibly proud of the consistently smart, funny work our cast creates and performs each month. The fact that the show has endured for so long is a testament to the talented people that make it. I’m incredibly lucky to get to work with them.”
The Anniversary Show will feature an array of favorite sketches from the show, as well as some new material, to celebrate this milestone event. Special guest acts will include Revue favorite Bettysioux Tailor, Emmy award winning musician Bill Harley, comedians Katie McCarthy and Nick Orlatoni, singer songwriter Hannah Devine, and original Sparkling Beatnik Richard Goulis. After the show, the Beatniks will stick around to mingle and celebrate with the audience.
Over the years, the Revue has been host to such RI favorites as Mark Cutler, Kim Trusty, Joanne Lurgio, Chris Monti, Bettysioux Tailor, Christopher Johnson, Jon Campbell, and Sokeo Ros. Special guests have also included comedians who have gone on to receive national recognition, such as Matt Donaher, who has appeared on the Conan Show, and Ahmed Bharoocha, who has also appeared on Conan and will star in his own Comedy Central special this summer. And, as AS220 celebrated its 30th anniversary in October 2015, Munslow, the Sparkling Beatniks, and the Superchief Trio provided an all-star edition of the Revue as a ramp-up to keynote speaker John Waters.
Even as the Empire Revue celebrates this milestone, Munslow is already looking towards the future. “The show continues to evolve and grow in ways that surprise even me,” he says. “My hope is that as we approach the next ten years, we will continue to commit ourselves to making a sharp, consistently funny show that our community can be proud of.”
The Empire Revue Anniversary Show will take place on Sunday, July 3 at 8pm at AS220 (115 Empire Street, Providence, RI 02903). Tickets are available ahead of the show at revue-tenth.brownpapertickets.com ($8), or at the door at showtime ($10).
