ARTISTS CRENCA AND CLAUSEN MARRY THEIR WORK IN “COUPLING” AT THE 159 SUTTON STREET GALLERY IN PROVIDENCE

PROVIDENCE, RI - A two-person exhibition at 159 Sutton Street Gallery in Providence’s west end joins the work of longtime AS220 power couple Umberto Crenca and Susan Clausen. Paintings, sculpture, video and Mr. Bones will be on display for much of October and November. The opening reception will be held on Thursday October 5th from 5-8 pm, the closing on Thursday, November 30th, 5-8pm. Gallery hours will be held on most Saturdays between those dates, from 2-4, and by appointment.

Clausen’s Mr. Bones installation, which features a slightly larger than life-size paper mache skeleton, is once more “at home”, having completed residencies earlier this year in Olneyville’s Dirt Palace front window gallery space, and at a group exhibition at the Sprinkler Factory in Worcester MA. For Coupling, we find him hanging out in his breakfast nook with his artwork, watching Mousie video reruns and drinking tea. Clausen has created a new batch of bobble head wall sculptures for this show, each of which moves with the (gentle) tug of a cord.

Crenca’s artwork is no less kinetic for being stationary: his new series of 4 vivid self portraits survey the artist’s search for truth and understanding, with tongue planted firmly in his cheek. His Enigma series is equally vibrant, each painting a facet of the artist’s effort to explore and understand people and their surroundings.

Susan and Bert have are and have been coupled for thirty three years and have had abutting studios for all of that time. Unavoidably they have had influence on each other’s work, and this is readily apparent and a delight to behold in Coupling.
