Maybe you are a beginner waiting to make your first project or want to move from iMovie to software that gives you more creative control, this workshop is for you. The class as a whole will walk through the entire editing and post-production process for making a short one-minute video using media provided to you.

Get up to speed on the basics of video editing and post-production including:

• Importing and organizing your files
• Choosing your shots
• Basics of editing your project
• Adjusting the audio
• Adding titles and credits
• Exporting your project
• Uploading your video to the web

The AS220 Media Arts lab is equipped with Apple computers and the entire Adobe Creative Cloud suite. You are welcome to bring your own computer as long as you have Adobe Premiere which can be downloaded here and comes with a trial.

Intro to Illustrator will allow participants to learn the basic tools and uses of Illustrator CC to manipulate vector graphics for a range of projects and applications.  From screen printing to vinyl decals, Illustrator contains a wide array of tools that will help you create compelling graphics and images. This class will cover everything that’s needed to start creating, from the fundamentals of pixels versus vectors to basic drawing and shape manipulation. By the end of the session, you’ll have an understanding of the basic toolkit and the ability to start building scalable graphics.

The Modular Rhythm Machine was conceived, designed and built as a vehicle to explore rhythm and percussion in different cultural contexts. It is a tool to search for questions about the meaning and forces behind rhythmic patterns, synchronicity, syncopation, and chaos.  Each participant will finish the 4-session workshop with a fully functioning self-playing drum module and with a precise idea and necessary files to produce more in the future, if interested.

Tuesdays, February 5-20, 6-9pm  (4 weeks)

Any pro will tell you the road to becoming a better cartoonist or illustrator is storytelling. The art forms are all about conveying a narrative. Whether it’s start forward, abstract, traditional or digital, all the basics will be covered in this intensive class. This workshop is suggested for ages 17 and up.

This visual narrative workshop is the perfect way to craft your own visual voice, dialog and becoming a better visual storyteller. You’ll leave with a better understanding of basic narrative either through a panel-to-panel comic or stand alone illustrations. Instructor Steve Mardo will guide students through the process of making visually intriguing images that tell a short story. The class will help develop and nurture your skills and problem solving abilities. Style, technique and reference to golden age and current illustrators and comic book artists will be the focus and practice. Expect guest speakers and in-class exercises! We end with going over publishing and submitting your work online and beyond to help build your audience and/ or business.

Instructor : Steve Mardo is a freelance illustrator from Rhode Island who has studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York and received his BFA in illustration from MassArt in Boston. Clients include American Cancer Society, Northeastern Magazine, Dig Boston, The Pet Gazette, The Motif Magazine, Light Publications, Locust Moon Comics, Hope Media, Middle Center Productions, Improper Bostonian, Rhode Island Monthly. His art has also been showcased at Gallery X, AS220, 13 Forest Gallery, AnnMarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center and Gallery 1988. Get certified to use the TORMACH Personal CNC for metal machining.

Saturday February 16 + 23, 2-6pm

This workshop is for anyone that has completed the Shopbot class and wants to machine small metal parts.  We will cover basic machine operation and safety. The system accepts files for both 2D and 3D models. Additionally, basic machining functions are included within the PathPilot R Interface software. These functions use a Conversational screen to generate the G-Code, which then runs the machine. Typical functions include Face, Profile, Pocket, Drill/Tap, Thread Mill, and Engrave. The machine is capable of milling materials such as circuit boards, aluminum, steel, and iron.  The table travel capacity is X-18”, Y-9.5”, Z-16.25”.  Our machine is the TORMACH Personal CNC, Model PCNC 1100. It uses a spray coolant system to maintain temperature and remove material.
