Before We Begin Commences June 1st!

Come with your sweatpants and a dollar coin for the experience of a lifetime!  12 days only!

Providence, RI — Before We Begin is an immersive theatrical experience. Your guides, Jed and Rebecca (played by themselves) take the audience (played by yourselves) through a class/lecture/ritual while coming to terms with their own inadequecies. Admission to the show requires a one dollar coin. Audiences are also asked to wear sweatpants.

“In all honesty, we are trying to lose the plot, lose our way, lose big, and take you with us,” says Rebecca Noon, co-director of Strange Attractor with her real-life husband, Jed Hancock-Brainerd.

The piece will feature Noon and Hancoke-Brainerd, exploiting their real relationship, the drama of their real lives, and their innate pull towards the absurd, Before We Begin will bring audiences in close contact with each other, requiring every one’s full participation.

This is the first production fostered by the AS220’s Community Live Arts Residency, a new program committed to new interdisciplinary work that is connected to AS220’s mission of unjuried uncensored art for all ages. The 6-month residency is designed for teams of local working/teaching/practicing community artists to create original material while also developing their profiles as teachers/facilitators of community based art.

During the creation process the artists will volunteer with the Manton Avenue Project in conjunction with the show. Because the piece is about making real connection in an effort to heal the world, Strange Attractor will take over the summer 2016 playwrighting cycle of MAP, dramaturging and directing one round of approximately eight plays. They will put an emphasis on creating work that requires audience engagement/participation and physical theatre devising skills, rather than their traditional model of written plays. This will offer the young playwrights at MAP new ideas about what plays can be and teach them immersive theatre techniques while assisting in one of Providence’s most innovative after-school programs for low-income youth.
