AS220 YOUTH / BRIGHTER WORLDS / IZOLYATSIA JOINT EXHIBIT

WHEN: Saturday, July 9th from 5 -7 PM
WHERE: AS220 Aborn Gallery – 95 Empire Street (2nd Floor), Providence, RI
PRICE: FREE

This has been an intense 2 weeks of making for the students involved in the AS220 Brighter Worlds program, a collaboration with IZOLYATSIA (a Kyiv, Ukraine-based “non-profit non-governmental platform for contemporary culture”) through the Museums Connect program funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the American Alliance of Museums.

Just to catch you up on some of the highlights:

  • Students in Providence have received training and hands-on making opportunities on equipment at the AS220 Industries (Printshop, Media Arts, Labs)
  • Instructors from Ukraine visited Providence and AS220 in April to meet US students and participate in a printmaking lab
  • Providence-based instructors traveled to Ukraine in May to meet Ukrainian students and to attend the closing reception of the IZOLYATSIA gallery exhibit

Regarding the visit to Ukraine, AS220 Brighter Worlds Project Coordinator Marina Balko stated “Most of the youth in the program abroad have been displaced from the contested Donbass region. IZOLYATSIA‘s former space also in the Donbass region, much like many of the participants homes, was recently seized by Russian occupiers. The program helped to rebuild IZO’s maker space and print studio. During our discussions there, the students have expressed that the program has given then the confidence and knowledge to rebuild their identities, particularly as artists and makers. I cannot express really how powerful the conversations had between us and these young people were.”

The gallery exhibit on July 9th will feature student work that has incorporated processes using resources at AS220 such as our laser cutter, 3D printer, microcomputers, photography, video, virtual reality, screen printing, and more, to imagine a museum exhibition about a future utopian Providence. Each person will make works examining an element of civil society that they feel strongly could be improved.

Attendees will be treated to an exclusive sneak preview of the sets being constructed by AS220 Youth and the AS220 Youth Mural Crew for FUTUREWORLDS: REVOLUTION, a hip hop theater fashion experience that combines the stories of young people and visionary fiction to engage audience in thought and dialogue about the social issues facing Providence youth today. FUTUREWORLDS: REVOLUTION will be premiering the weekend of September 9th at the Pell Chafee Performance Center in Providence.
