Sounion Hong: International Artist in Residence, at 95 EMPIRE – JANUARY 23RD
AS220’s Artist in Residence program is proud to be hosting South Korean illustrator and digital media artist, Sounion Hong, for the month of January 2013.
Sounion is originally from Seoul, South Korea and received her BFA from the Kaywon School of Art and Design, where she majored in Video Art. She has directed several music videos for South Korean musicians and has illustrated several magazines, novels and textbooks.
During her residency, Sounion has been spending time in the AS220 Printshop producing a series of “creature drawings” as silkscreen and offset prints. This series is Sounion’s own bestiary of psychedelic organisms; hybrids of both flora and fauna, with looping tentacles, bubbling lumps, and blooming eyes.
Sounion will also collaborate with Michael McCarthy of Drawn Along Studio, one of AS220’s commercial tenants at the Mercantile building, and the AS220 Media Arts program to create an animated short film titled “Tooth Fairy”. She will also produce an offset ‘zine with the art from her short film.
“I suggest for the search of indigenous and unique characteristics from unknown things that do not wish to reveal themselves on their own and grant universality to private and secretive things; therefore, escaping from the egotism of ‘Myself’ and ‘My territory’ so that people can view and empathize with themselves and with others from a neutral perspective.” – Sounion Hong
Sounion will present her work in AS220’s Black Box Theater at 95 Empire Street, Providence, on Wednesday, January 23rd from 7-8pm. Her prints will be on display and several of her videos will be screened, followed by short artist talk. Admission is free of charge.
