January at the Main Stage

January at the Main Stage

It’s a new year! Do you feel different? Do you feel that facts might no longer be facts? Left is right? Right is what I say? Are we living in the post-truth era? Is it safe to believe anything that we read anymore? Fake news is attracting a lot of attention these past few months, so let me re-assure you with some good-old-fashioned honesty straight out of the playbook of yore. All of the shows listed below are happening at the AS220 Main Stage in January! Well… except for one. One of the shows listed is actually a lie and it isn’t happening. I totally made it up.  It’s utter BS. Bogus. Isn’t that exciting? Now you have to figure out which one is fake. I will be accepting answers at my email and will randomly select one lucky correct answer submitted to win a prize! Or maybe I won’t. I might be lying about that part too, but you never know. THIS IS EXCITING ISN’T IT!?

Anyhow, if you made it your new year’s resolution to engage with art at least once a day then let me assist you with some offerings.

*As always, this is an incomplete listing of events for the complete AS220 calendar visit AS220.org

TUESDAY, JANUARY 3RD
SEWING CIRCLE
Sewing Circle is BACK and HARDER and STRONGER! HARD SEWING—that’s right. AS220 Resident Muse Rose Jermusyk is helping revive this night of crafting and creation. Bring your sewing, knitting, weaving, drawing, watercoloring, block-printing, jewelry-making, coloring book, wittling, gluesticks, whatever to the space and enjoy socializing with like-minded makers of Providence.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4th
MATH THE BAND THE BAND, THE ASTERPLACE, COMezik, THE DIVIDED SELF, and PROVIDENCE HOLIDAY SAXOPHONE CHOIR
In their own words: “Japanese most entertaining J-Rock Band The Asterplace! The Asterplace is New York City,USA based “Tokyo Melodic-Core x Japanese Anime Rock Band” . They bone in Tokyo, Japan. But you wonder why they’re living in NYC ? Because they wanna rock you!” For the record I didn’t write that, but I wish I did.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 6th
HAIRSPRAY QUEEN (EP RELEASE), WAY OUT, BLACK BEACH, GOON PLANET, and FUNERAL CONE
Every once in while the moon aligns with Saturn coming out of retrograde and the planet’s atmosphere is at the exact temperature Kelvin for an all time cosmic bill of performers. This right here is that night. It’s like the 1992 Cosmic USA Olympic Basketball team of shows. PS: I don’t know anything about astrology, but even so my reading is probably just as accurate as a “pro’s.”

TUESDAY, JANUARY 10th
JILLIAN KAY, WES SWING (VA) and ORION RIGEL DOMMISSE
“Beautiful swells conveying ocean landscapes looping delicately over cascading glowing fields” is how this show would be described on a wine bottle. The wine would be inordinately expense, but this show is only $7.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11th
BAD LUCK (SEA), PUPPET CLUB and LAURIE AMAT
What would life be without the ability to improvise? The best-laid plans are of hens and fauna (as they say) and who needs plans in music!?

THURSDAY JANUARY, 12th
LITTLEBOYBIGHEADONBIKE, THE SOLARS, and BARN BURNING
One time I saw a local news headline that said “Barn Stormer comes to Fitchburg” and it was old timey and nice.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 14th
THE FIRST ANNUAL PROVIDENCE LIVE FILM SCORE FESTIVAL
13 Short Films with live musical accompaniment!  It’s a frikkin’ festival! New and wonderful Community Curator Joe-Lou has set up the extravaganza of excellence.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 17th
POWER MONSTER, AD.UL.T,DOG HOSPICE, and HYMENAL OPENING
Just another day in all ages booking where an act called Hymenal Opening is performing.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 20th
14 FOOT 1, TODAY JUNIOR, JUNIOR BEAT, and EDGAR CLINKS
When driving on I-95 near Providence you go by an an overpassing bridge that says “14 foot 1” referring to the clearance height. I’ve always assumed this is how the band got their name but I’ve never asked. Can you do me a favor and go to the show and ask them if my assumptions are correct? If the story is true can you ask them if I win a prize since I need one to give out to the winner of my contest? We can cycle prizes.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 26th
R.A.P (RHYTHMIC AFRICAN POETRY) SLAM + ZU-OLOGY YOUTH OPEN MIC
The youth program and friends cast spells of verbal wizardry while your eardrums feel warm and tingly and you’re suddenly overcome by the insatiable urge to move your body.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 28th
The Providence Community Library Spelling Bee
The most intense form of theatre is the dramatic tension of spelling bees. Will the bell softly “ding” indicating a proverbial death and defeat as the speaker utters with trepidation, “V-I-V-I-S-E-P-U-L-T-U-R-E?” The judges don’t respond… the crowd gleefully erupts into applause!  Hot damn! Spelling makes us feel ALIVE.

THUESDAY, JANUARY 32nd:
JETHRO TULL (all flute set), BADFISH (sublime tribute band), KIM GORDON + THURSTON MOORE (reunion set), THE GHOST OF MILES DAVIS
Wow! What a great lineup of local music.
