So, what are you going to do about it?

So, what are you going to do about it?

AS220 was founded as an alternative space that is open to all artists to perform and exhibit their original work, whatever that may be. Any artist (any PERSON) in Rhode Island can perform on our stages, exhibit in our galleries, and gather in our spaces.

Our vision statement reads:

AS220 envisions a just world where all
people can realize their full creative potential.

Ideas like these, in and of themselves, cross all political* boundaries.

However, as an alternative space, sometimes, more than others, it is evident that AS220’s mission and values are often in opposition to those of the dominant culture and the powers that be.

AS220 believes in the freedom of expression. All are welcome to express themselves openly in our spaces – to exhibit, perform, speak, and create – in an atmosphere that is free from institutional judgement and the suppression of ideas.

AS220 is committed to fostering diversity within our spaces. Our AS220 Youth program says it best with their “Hateration Gets No Toleration” policy: “Every member of this community is committed to being respectful of our diversity in our words and actions while engaging in open dialogue about these issues. We recognize that we all harbor prejudices, but we are dedicated to challenging ourselves against them. We will not stand for bigotry or oppression. We stand for embracing, celebrating, and educating.”

AS220 is determined to create opportunity. We are especially committed to creating opportunity for underserved and marginalized populations of our society, as their potential to make an impact on the world at large is often overlooked, dismissed, or ignored completely.

AS220 is dedicated to supporting our community and enhancing cultural opportunities for all the people of Rhode Island and beyond. We provide affordable and equitable access to tools, technology, space, and knowledge. AS220 is a place to come together to collaborate, innovate, take risks, and experiment; it is a place to discover who you are and what you believe in.
