An Update
It's been a while since I've added anything to my weblog. I've probably
had 10-20 ideas for entries, but somehow I never get around to actually
writing anything. First things first, though -- it's time for an update
of what's going on in my life.
I ended my VISTA year at AS220 in August, thereby finishing a
three-year stint of national community service. I signed on with
Americorps after graduating from college; I discovered that I could get
paid (albeit not much) to make and teach art. I spent two years with The International Gallery
for Heritage and Culture before moving over to AS220. During the
last three years I learned a tremendous amount about art, culture, and
education in Providence. I also learned how to live on a minimal
budget.
You're only allowed to do three years of service with Americorps/VISTA;
after that you're on your own. So, after a wonderful trip to California
with my friend Erin, I started the process of piecing together various
joblets. It took my about two weeks to find a decent amount of work;
right now I have, at last count, 4 different places of employment. I
work twenty hours a week as an administrative assistant at Education Station, a No Child Left
Behind-funded after-school tutoring program. I teach an
after-school art class at the Met
School and a elective ceramics class at the Wheeler School. I
substitute teach there sometimes as well. This week I'm starting job
#4 -- after-school tutoring through a group called Rhode Islanders
Sponsoring Education. I'm working on average 26 hours a week, but I
feel pretty busy. I've been doing some work at the Steelyard where I rent studio
space, and I'm taking a block printing and woodcut class. Today's other project besides updating my weblog is knitting;
I'm going to be selling hats at Craftland this December, and I want to
finish 2-3 more before November rolls around.
So that's where I'm at. Stay tuned for more updates.
