Mayday! or, How I Won the Kentucky Derby

So the original plan for May 1st was to drive to Maine to see The Mammals and Yo La Tengo, but after some careful research it was determined that Yo La Tengo was not actually playing at all and the decision was made not to drive 3 hours. Instead, Matt & I went to Vicky Wheeler's Derby Day party. Apparently, watching the Kentucky Derby means spending 3 hours eating and drinking mint juleps and then spending 3 minutes actually watching the race. I don't know how betting on horses officially works, but what we did was write down our top 3 horses and put five dollars in a cannister. I picked Smarty Jones based primarily on the cool name factor, and then cheered the guy on to victory--three of us picked him, so the $75 pot was split between us.

I'm noticing now that there's a lot of threes in this story, but it was also a day of firsts--first time betting (and winning) on a horse race, and first time purchasing a case of alcohol (due to an amazing deal on Knob Creek at the local liquor store).

The other important aspect of Derby Day is to dress one's best. I didn't have anything appropriate for horse racing, so I opted for my orange Harley Davidson tank top. Vicky had a great hat that Matt had found a couple years ago when he was babysitting for Henry--we had to make him try it on, of course. Isn't he purty?

Part 2 of May Day was the party on Cemetary Street--all the local hipsters, bikers, vegans, and all-around cool people were there. Erin, Matt, & I sat on the garage roof and listened to Urdog. After that we went over to the List Art Building to check out the SPACE show, and finished off the night back at the art shack listening to Mahi Mahi and 25 Suaves.

All in all, a good 12 hours of entertainment, quality drinks and music, and a good remedy for the stress of working on the Fools Ball
