9:30pm Mike Baggetta: Canto, Modus and Classical Gas
Classical Gas, jazz standards and funk. .Mike Baggetta likes to try
making something beautiful from something ugly. That's why his
experimental guitar compositions/improvisations are performed on a
semi-plastic guitar prepared with bits of metal and other materials. These
musical pieces inspire thought and visceral emotion from the listener
yearning to travel without a map. Does aural beauty emerge amidst the
squeaks, scrapes and other noises? We think so.... . Optical Sounds
Records Guitarist, composer and improvisor Mike Baggetta is quickly
emerging as a leading voice in his genre. His sensitive musicality has
been recognized by seasoned professionals and has lead to
performances/recordings with such musical legends as Bucky Pizzarelli, Tom
Harrell, Ruth Brown, Tony Reedus and Ralph Bowen. In addition to
performing across the United States, Mike has also premiered original
works at such renowned venues as The Kennedy Center (Washington, D.C.),
Town Hall (New York, NY) and The 92nd St. Y (New York, NY). Modus formed
in 2002 when three Rutgers University jazz majors started meeting to play
their original experimental jazz compositions. Since then they have been
gathering an underground following playing bars, clubs, galleries, house
parties, and coffeehouses in the New York/New Jersey area. In the
tradition of Ornette Coleman, Ken Vandermark, John Zorn and others, Modus
features tight arrangements, free-wheeling improvisations and deep
grooves. Accordingly, Modus appeals to both hardcore jazz fans as well as
rock fans with an ear for the unusual.

9pm Barnacled, Rare Bird Rumba Ranch and The Early Morning Band
BEAT SCIENCE CANCELLED (POSSIBLE 5/16 RESCHEDULING). Barnacled is a
sound-collective born in Providence at the turn of the millenium, dealing
in realms as at-first-seemingly-disparate as interpretive
composi-improvisation, neo-minimalist incidentalism, mindless repetition,
and hot rockin'. Combining traditional elements of merengue, rumba, and
son with experimental jazz and quirky rock, The Rare Bird Rumba Ranch has
developed a style all its own. Drawing from the varied backgrounds of its
members, the Ranch is at times a musical avalanche, at others a minimalist
dance party, while at others an exploration into the dark recesses of the
mind. Songs are sung, percussion is whacked, people move, and short,
original poems are recited. The drummer writes the music and leads the
band and those attending the live shows are left with a happy, energized
feeling. Based in NYC, the Birds include Greg Stare on conga kit and lead
vocals, Michael Attias on alto and bari saxophones and vocals, Josh Camp
on accordion and vocals, Taylor Bergren-Chrisman on electric bass and
vocals, and Las Rubias del Norte on vocals. The Early Morning Band, which
has ex-members of The Feud and the current bassist of Mezzanine C-14.
They hail from NYC and resemble Steam-era Mercury Rev with 31knots and
King Crimson.

9pm Kendra Flowers, Delphine, Monique Ortiz (Bourbon Princess)(Solo) and
Rosanna Lee
Performing brand new material from her upcoming album (due for release
Summer/Fall 2004), Flowers takes her listener to the corners of an
emotional soundscape through stunning 12-string guitar work & gritty raw
vocals, held together with sophistocated arrangements of poetry and sound.
While there are hundreds of female singer/songwriters who have begun their
performing careers in Boston, Rosanna Lee is probably the only one who has
created a tiny DIY record label whose debut release won the Boston Music
Award for "Best Folk/Acoustic Album (for the 1999 compilation CD "Can You
Read This Boston?") and who has been a talent scout for a national record
label (Vanguard Records) before pursuing acareer of her own. In 2002 she
followed in the long tradition of Boston street and subway performers by
heading to Park St. Station with about 40 songs and a head of steam. By
the end of the year she had released her own debut CD, "The Girl With The
Red Guitar", and took it with her on the road in 2003, performing over 75
shows at clubs, coffeehouses and colleges across the United States. In the
winter of 2004, she will be brandishing a new guitar, releasing a new 5
song EP called "Make Believe" and performing at new venues all over the
country. Seven Days VT declared, "Lee is getting known for her intricate
folk-pop gems" and it's clear that more people are going to be finding out
about her in the coming year. Delphine, singer/songwriter Todd Belcher
has been writing and performing throughout New England since 1996, on and
off with longtime friend Myles Baer. As Delphine, Todd & Myles present
each song with sincerity, featuring delicate instrumentation that is
subtle even in its most driven moments. Sparse lyrical landscapes are
elevated by richly textured arrangements that flow between simple
arpeggios and walls of distortion. The songs are about life experiences,
such as the feeling of time slipping away ("Time is hard for me to take" -
March 126), the loss of loved ones ("You were gone for years when you
left, and I'm still waiting to say goodbye" - Swear That I Swear), and the
underappreciated ("No one sees you, and no one believes you, no one sees
the cross you bear" - Elky Pro).

8pm Clones of Sam, Grumble Grumble, RECORE, Jason Sigal and One Eyed
Stanley
Grumble Grumble is five young men with passable small motor skills playing
big, confusing music. Expect grandiosity, paroxysms, gratuitous vocal
effects, and lots of reverb. One Eyed Stanley, from Newton, Massachusetts
have been a band for three years, and have been praised by man for their
original sound, with two guitars, bass, drums, and piano. What can only be
classified as rock will keep you on you on your feet for the whole night.
Jason Sigal, veteran of several NJ bands including the Kitsch, Furthermore
Susan, and Gay Train/the Grape Escape, currently living in Providence,
brings his diverse arsenal of home recorded solo work out of the home and
onto the stage with the help of some friends. RECORE, three piece local
punk/modern rock fusion. Clones of Sam, the brainchild of an ex-Jazz
drummer turned guitarist, hails from Warwick, RI. A listen to any Clones
of Sam track will unearth tones of funk, jazz, blues and rock influences.

11am-6pm The Poetry & Politics of Resistance: A Fund & Awareness Raiser
Brunch to Defend Camilo Viveiros
Join Puerto Rican poet and author Frank Morales from the Lower East Side
of New York City and Gan Golan one of the first Miami/FTAA (Free Trade
Area of the Americas) protesters to go to trial, for the politics and
poetry of resistance to repression. Mr. Morales is an ordained reverend
and a social activist against police brutality and political repression.
He is one of the cofounders of the New York based Campaign to Demilitarize
the Police. Mr. Morales will present his research and perform poetry from
the pages of his work published in the journal Covert Action and in the
book Police State America. Police State America is an anthology that
details military and police efforts in the interest of corporate sponsored
social control. He will share slides and short film excerpts
followed by a discussion and a brunch to raise awareness and funds for the
defense of Camilo Viveiros. Gan Golan is an MIT student who was one of
the first of the Miami/FTAA defendants to go to trial. Along with many
others he was gassed and beaten by the police while protesting the
corporate backed FTAA. The brutal behavior of the Miami police toward
protesters has since become known as "The Miami Model". Mr. Golan is a
cofounder of the Boston based project "Beyond Criminalization of Dissent",
which seeks tog enerate public awareness about John Timoney's model of
repression (Philadelphia & Miami). Mr. Golan has also worked against
Timoney's consulting role for the Democratic National Convention in
Boston. John Timoney was the police commissioner of Philadelphia during
the Republican National Convention. Timoney is directly responsible for
Camilo's charges. Timoney went on to coordinate police repression in
Miami. John Timoney's law enforcement practices threaten not only Camilo's
freedom but also all of our liberties. We will discuss the implications
Camilo's case has for the upcoming protests during the Republican National
Convention in New York. The brunch will gather legal funds to defend Mr.
Viveiros against trumped up charges stemming from protests countering the
Republican National Conference in 2000. Camilo Viveiros is facing a 15-30
sentence if he is convicted on charges that are part of a coordinated
strategy to villainize protesters as dangerous and violent. For more
information see web links below. The brunch and presentations will
include a discussion about attempts to limit civil liberties in Rhode
Island. We will discuss challenges to our freedom of speech, assembly and
expression. Join us for these important events and stand up for your
rights.
BRUNCH WILL BE SERVED 11am through 2pm at AS220
Frank Morales and Gan Golan will present at 2pm at AS220

9pm Harris Newman (guitar) & Bruce Cawdron (percussion), Frank Difficult
and JMMJ
PERISHABLE CLASS SPACE, SECOND FLOOR. These days it seems as though
anyone performing instrumental music with an accustic guitar as the
centerpiece is automatically referred to the late John Fahey. So it comes
as an invigorating breath of fresh air to hear the music of Harris Newman,
a guitarist from Montreal, Canada, whose musical approach actually does
come from a perspective true to the American acoustic compositional
tradition that Fahey and his Takoma Records imprint helped advance.
Newman's accoustic fingerpicking dances and swaggers, creating a sunny
expanse of tunes that are augmented by stark, introspective passages.
Newman is joined by percussionist Bruce Cawdron, and the combination at
times evokes the spirit of exploratory genre-blending. Frank Difficult,
member of the Barnacled doing solo electronics.
