PRJ 101 Introduction to Laser Cut Press Fit Design: Build Your Own Wine Rack or Box
In this class, students will learn about the basics of press fit design using the Lab's Epilog Mini Laser Cutter. Students will fabricate and build a wine rack or decorative box. Additionally, the students will have the opportunity to customize either project is unique etched graphics.
This class will introduce the student to the concepts of press fit design and assembly. No glue or nails will be needed to make these sturdy, professional looking projects. Students interested in customizing their projects should get themselves familiar with Inkscape and bring any graphics with them on a USB stick.
This is a great starting point for students interested in developing their own press fit designs. However, it is also a great class for students who just want to make a cool gift.
Students can chose to make either project and all materials will be provided. The class is comprised of one 3 hour session and you will take your project home at the end.
Though participants will have the opportunity to use the laser cutter, this class does not include full training of the equipment or Labs certification to use the laser cutter on their own. Students wishing to be trained on the operation of the laser cutter are encouraged to sign up for the next session of LAB 110 Introduction to the Laser Cutter.
Wine Rack
The wine rack option is based on a design developed by Labs member MatthewZimmerman and looks similar to the one shown in the images below. Students will be able to customize the design by adding laser etched images or text to the front paned of the wine rack.
Decorative Box
The decorative box design is based on a design developed by Labs member MatthewZimmerman and looks similar to the one shown in the images below. The top of the box opens with an innovative hinge. Students will be able to customize the design by adding laser etched images or text to one side (or top) of the box.
