Is This Jazz? Presents: Rich Halley 4 & Sweet Pea’s Clam Shack @ AS220 Main Stage
May 20 @ 8:30 pm – May 21 @ 1:00 am
Rich Halley 4 and Sweet Pea’s Clam Shack
Another big weekday show announcement for you all! On Wednesday, May 20th we are representing both coasts with an incredibly unique weekday ITJ @ AS220!
Opening the night we have the spectacularly named local group Sweet Pea’s Clam Shack. This new ensemble is the brainchild of RI’s own Chris Gagnon and Mark Medeiros, and judging by the three year anniversary show we just had, you know to expect some gorgeous and intense compositions from these two. They both have played ITJ before in other bands but lately they have gotten together to collaborate on new music, which their excited to premier for you all at their inaugural performance. Headlining the night we have the Rich Halley 4 who are making their way from the West Coast in support of their 5th and latest album release. Rich Halley is a saxophonist and composer based in Portland, Oregon who has released seventeen recordings as a leader, and has performed with some heavy names such as Tony Malaby, Julius Hemphill, Vinny Golia, Bobby Bradford, Nels Cline, Michael Bisio, Obo Addy, Andrew Hill and Oliver Lake. Jazz Times described him as “A free rider from the Left Coast, tenor saxophonist-composer Rich Halley is a powerful player…In New York he’d be a star on the avant-garde scene”. This group also features other master musicians such as trombonist Michael Vlatkovich, bassist Clyde Reed and drummer Carson Halley. They just released their latest album “Creating Structures” which is their first recording devoted entirely to free group improvisation, and showcases the group’s original approach to improvising which combines freedom, feeling and traditional elements into a seamless whole. Bill Meyer of DownBeat magazine says “This quartet plays with the easy confidence of men who have shared stages many times. Portland-based tenor saxophonist Rich Halley’s music occupies the point where populism and freedom come together”.
To see jazz of this caliber during the week in Providence is unheard of so please come on down and lets show the other side of the country some love! Music starts around 9pm, admission is $10 to see a performance from guys you’d have to hop on a plane to catch otherwise.

Artist Talk with Sharon Cutts @ AS220 Project Space
May 21 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Artist Sharon Cutts will be giving an artist talk at the AS220 Project space on Thursday May 21st at 5:30 pm at the AS220 Project Space at 93 Mathewson St. The talk coincides with Sharon’s exhibition Wall People; a series of new canvas mosaics on curved wood. The mosaic process is slow and time-consuming developed from earlier work of cut and torn painted canvas. For the Wall People Sharon affixed canvas mosaic onto bent wood and  the curved and bent sculptural shapes add dynamism and allow the characters to reach out or bow over the viewer. Meet the artist and learn more this Thursday!

Free and open to the public.

Evening Yoga @ AS220 Live Arts Dance Studio
May 21 @ 6:15 pm – 7:30 pm
Evening Yoga Yoga with Jamie Arnold // Thursdays @ 6:15-7:30pm // $13 per class; $60 for 6 classes
March is 2 for 1 Thursdays! Bring a pal and split the cost of class!
Class incorporates a seated centering and focus on breath connection which then leads to a gentle warm-up of the spine. After moving the spine in multiple directions, we will easily make our way to being on hands and feet and eventually flow through a simplified series of sun salutations to get the body warm. We will then explore balance postures, twists and back strengthening exercises and eventually make our way back to the floor for more restorative poses leading to savasana.

Jamie Arnold is a local yoga educator and performing artist. She has been teaching a regular gentle flow class at the East Side YMCA for 2.5 years and has taught yoga in some way shape or form through Squam Art Workshops, Now Yoga & Fitness, Fight2Fitness, Om Kids, Rhode Runner, Studio Exhale and AS220. Jamie received her 200 hour yoga teaching certification in the winter of 2012 through the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockbridge, MA. For Jamie, yoga has helped her to truly be in the present moment, let go of stress and feel like weight has been lifted from her body.

Mixed Magic Theatre Presents “Reflections: Growing up as a Black Man in America”
May 21 @ 7:30 pm – 8:45 pm
Mixed Magic Theatre Presents "Reflections: Growing up as a Black Man in America"

Growing up a as a Black man in America can be a difficult and dramatic balancing act. On one hand, Black men have to deal with history and traditions that can destroy the body and the soul. On the other hand there is the pride and joy that comes with overcoming the forces that would hold you back and still have space to create great art, great food and laughter.

With stories, poetry and songs, REFLECTIONS examines aspects of what Black men must do to survive and stay focused on the future, in the land of the free and the home of the brave. While this reality has many lows, it also has highs that cannot be ignored.

This is a journey from the perils of boyhood to the perils of manhood. It is a paradox wrapped in a conundrum. But ultimately, it is a celebration of life, living and hope.

The cast of REFLECTIONS includes poet/actor and filmmaker Jay Walker, hip-hop artist and musician Jerediah (Big Scythe) Gonzalez and actors Mishell Lilly, Amos Hamrick Jr. and Ricardo Pitts-Wiley.

Workshop Description
Learn how to use the laser cutter to cut or etch wood, plastics, papers or textiles. This class will cover the basics of using the laser cutter safely, techniques for working with different materials, and software tools for preparing work for the cutter. This is a hands-on workshop; bring a project if you like! We have an Epilog Mini 24 Laser Cutter. The work area is 24″ x 12″, and it can hold items up to 8″ tall. We also have a cylindrical attachment that allows you to etch cylinders such as glassware.
In the first session, you will learn and get trained on the machine. In the second session, you will do a simple project to complete your training on the machine.
After taking the workshop, you will have a solid understanding of what the machine can do and how to design a project. Students will be certified to use the Labs’ laser cutter after completing this follow up session.
Instructor: Shawn Wallace

May 23 @ 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Register Here

This workshop is for anyone interested in using a CNC Router for digital fabrication, specifically the ShopBot machine for computer-controlled cutting and routing. The course covers an introduction to the ShopBot, Computer-Aided Design software to design projects for the machine, creation of 2D tool paths for the machine using PartWorks, and basic machine operation and safety.  You will learn how to safely operate the machine on your own, so that you may use the machine independently after completing the training and signing up for membership.

Our machine is a ShopBot PRS standard 96 with a cutting area of 96″ (x-axis) x 48″ (y-axis) x 6″ (z-axis). The machine is capable of machining 2D parts (profile, pockets, drilling) and making 3D carvings.  This workshop only covers 2D tool paths, not 3D carvings.

This workshop consists of two parts, 1 3-hour instructional session and a followup session on the machine where you run a project on the machine.
